Why post-harvest loss is the quiet crisis in Ghana's rice sector

When people talk about food security in Ghana, the conversation usually turns to how much we grow. But a huge share of the problem sits on the other side of the harvest: how much we lose after the crop is already in.

For rice, post-harvest losses can reach 46%, much of it during slow, manual threshing and cleaning. That is grain a farmer has already spent a whole season growing, lost in the final stretch. It is also income lost, and it is one reason Ghana still imports more than 60% of the rice it consumes.

Mechanization is not a silver bullet, but it is the most direct lever we have. Faster, gentler threshing and efficient cleaning mean more of every harvest reaches the market at a higher quality, and more money stays in the farmer's hands. That is the gap Wobil exists to close.
